Animation of Installation

The animation shows the full sequence, from building the concrete base to positioning the sculpture.

I would be glad to come to Athens to help install the sculpture, confirm its orientation and complete the final touch-ups, without an artist’s fee.

Delivery to Athens

The sculpture was collected from the New York studio on 16 October 2026 by Atelier4, the local agent for the Embassy’s shipper. The studio’s estimate for crating, air freight and local delivery is approximately two to three weeks; the arrival date has not yet been confirmed.

Construction notes

Written guidance to accompany the animation. Illustrative only: the contractor and a licensed structural engineer determine the final foundation, reinforcement, concrete specification, anchoring and methods for the site.

LocationConfirm the exact position of the base with George Petrides before excavation, in person or by video call.
Formwork tubeCardboard formwork tube, Ø 65 cm, cut to 190 cm: 150 cm above finished grade plus 40 cm down to the top of the footing. Tubes are typically supplied in 3 m lengths and cut on site. Example suppliers in Greece: Palagkas.gr and Rammos.com.gr. Ask for a smooth-finish tube, which reduces finishing work.
Excavation and footingPit 100 × 100 cm, 70 cm deep. Footing 30 cm thick, its top 40 cm below finished grade, extending at least 15 cm beyond the tube on every side. Two-layer 20 × 20 cm reinforcement grid, wired together. Engineer to confirm.
Vertical reinforcementTwelve vertical bars on a 40 cm circle, tied with hoops and to the grid, before the footing is poured. Vibrate each pour to remove air pockets. Engineer to confirm.
ColumnStand the tube over the bars, brace it with timber and pour. The concrete rises 150 cm above grade: 140 cm visible and 10 cm fitting into the recess in the underside of the sculpture.
CuringTypically 4–5 days before stripping the formwork; to be confirmed by the contractor and engineer.
FinishingPeel off the tube and grind down the spiral seam ridge with an angle grinder. Fill with an exterior-grade filler, prime with a quality exterior primer, then apply several coats of exterior paint. Choose a color sympathetic to the sculpture with the studio; avoid very light colors, which detach the sculpture visually from the ground and show soiling more readily. Backfill to grade.
InstallationThe sculpture weighs about 30 kg. Four threaded bolts are set in drilled holes with adhesive; the attachment method is to be confirmed by the studio, the contractor and, where structurally applicable, the engineer. Ideally George Petrides is present to confirm the orientation. Install the approved bronze plaque, restore the site around the base and make sure water does not pool around the column.
