Maintenance and Care
The portrait is designed for exterior display. Regular cleaning and renewal of the protective clear coat preserve the metal finish.
Facilities staff should assign responsibility and budget for its ongoing care. See The sculpture for the materials and studio-applied finish.
Maintenance
Care routine
Studio care guidance · updated 23 October 2026.
Routine cleaning
Clean periodically with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt. For routine cleaning of the intact clear coat, do not use abrasives, metal polish, solvents or a pressure washer. The restoration procedure below applies when the metal coating has oxidized and darkened.
Inspection
Look over the whole surface before each annual renewal and after any severe weather or impact. Report chips, scratches through the finish or loss of coating to the studio before recoating.
If the metal coating darkens
If the protective clear coat is not renewed, the metal coating will darken through oxidation. The brass head in particular will become visibly darker over the course of one or two years.
In that case, the whole surface can be cleaned with cleaning fluid, then burnished with 00 steel wool to remove the oxidized metal. Once the surface is lighter and shiny again, a new layer of clear coat can be applied.
